History

Hoke County has seen many individuals contribute to its industrialization. Turpentine production from large pine forests covered by Hoke County was the initial industry that came here, followed by lumber mills and cotton mills. 1907 brought with it Jamestown Exposition which attracted thousands of visitors; then in 1948 a corporation was set up in order to draw even more industries, which attracted American Wringer (later acquired by Para Thread), Robbins Mill and American Wringer to Hoke County.

The Museum on the outskirts of town reflects this period in its architecture. The McLauchlin-McFadyen and Parker Ray Houses stand as outstanding examples of Neoclassical Revival styles while other buildings like one-room school houses, smokehouses, doll buildings and country stores are representative of vernacular forms that could be found across southeastern North Carolina railroad towns.

The Museum is owned and run by a local family with deep ties to real estate. Brad Calloway was raised in Raeford and gained experience working for J.H. Wright Realty before starting his own firm specializing in county real estate sales. This background allowed him to understand the significance of supporting local business and industry – ultimately seeing Raeford flourish and grow!
